HDB was founded in 1932, under the leadership of Hubert De Backer. What began with lipsticks and powder compacts grew into a global player in medical and pharmaceutical packaging. Today, we are an established player in the sector. Read our full history here!
1932
Hubert De Backer founds HDB, a family-owned company specialised in injection moulding of plastic materials. In the beginning, HDB produces products such as lipsticks, powder boxes, caps, etc.
1958
Hubert De Backer nv creates its first intramammary syringe. This is the first step into the pharmaceutical world. At this time, HDB had approximately 80 employees.
1982
Second generation: Jan De Backer succeeds his father Hubert. HDB switches from 2 shifts to 3 shifts, this is the start of 24/5 production. Jan De Backer expands the business of HDB to other countries, creating an international market for our products.
1984
HDB creates the combination plug + syringe to make it even easier to fill the syringe with fluids.
1986
HDB evolves to comply with the increasingly strict pharmaceutical demands. The first dust-proof production division is installed.
1992
HDB obtains the ISO 9001 certificate. The ISO 9001 is the international norm for quality management systems. The company has approximately 100 employees in 1992.
1993
HDB develops the dual end cap for intramammary syringes. The top part of this cap can be broken off with the thumb so that veterinarians and farmers only have to use one hand to use the syringe.
2000
HDB expands by buying a new building in Temse. All production moves to this new building.
2002
From now on, production runs 24/7.
2003
The first cleanroom is installed at HDB. We currently have two cleanrooms that have a combined surface of 3888 m². Both human and veterinary applications can be produced in our clean rooms (class ISO 5 or ISO 7).
2013
Third generation: Stijn De Backer succeeds his father Jan.
2015
All departments move to the new building in Temse, making Temse the new headquarters. Sint-Niklaas is now only used as warehouse.
2018
Due to its rapid expansion, HDB expands even further and buys a new warehouse near the current building in Temse. HDB has grown to a company of more than 140 employees (both white-collar and blue-collar).
2023
HDB celebrates its 90th anniversary.
